Terms & Conditions - Idea Becomes Light

1. Eligibility

  • Open to Australian residents aged 18 years or older.

  • Open to anyone with an idea including but not limited to designers, students, artists,
    makers, creatives and non-designers, all of whom are encouraged to enter.

  • Individuals and teams may enter. One winning submission will receive the prize set out
    below.

  • Home of Lights employees may enter but cannot participate in the judging process.

  • AI may be used for inspiration only. Final submissions must be original concepts
    presented as sketches, renders or digital drawings, and not AI-generated images alone.

  • Final date for submission is midnight, August 16, 2026

2. Submission Requirements

Each entry must include:

  • An original lighting concept

  • A name for the piece

  • A short written explanation of the idea or story

  • A personal hallmark, signature or symbol connected to the design

Concepts may be submitted as sketches, notebook drawings, renders, collages, physical
models, written ideas or partially developed concepts.

Entries must be the entrant's own original work and must not knowingly infringe another
person's intellectual property.

3. Selection Process

The selection process will occur in four stages:

Stage 1: Home of Lights reviews all eligible submissions.

Stage 2: The Home of Lights community (Instagram/TikTok/Facebook) participates in
public voting to help determine a shortlist of finalists.

Stage 3: A judging panel comprising selected Home of Lights Makers together with the
creative lead at Home of Lights reviews the shortlisted concepts.

Stage 4: Home of Lights selects the winning concept. Community voting is intended to help shape the shortlist but does not guarantee selection. Home of Lights retains final discretion in selecting the winning entry.e entitlements set out above.

4. Judging Criteria

Entries may be assessed against:

  • Originality and creativity

  • Storytelling and emotional connection

  • Design intent and aesthetic quality

  • Commercial potential

  • Manufacturability and feasibility

  • Alignment with the Home of Lights brand

  • Overall quality of the submission

5. Prize

The winning entrant will receive:

  • A $5,000 AUD design fee upon execution of the Collaboration Agreement.

  • The opportunity to have their concept developed into a commercially released
    Home of Lights lighting product.

  • Professional storytelling documenting the journey from idea to product.

  • Feature across Home of Lights marketing, PR, social media and launch campaign.

  • A one-off bonus payment of $3,000 AUD, payable once only, if net sales of the
    launched product reach $50,000 AUD within 12 months of the official launch date.
    Net sales exclude GST, freight, refunds, discounts, returns and applicable taxes.
    This is a single, fixed milestone payment and does not constitute an ongoing royalty or revenue share, and no further payment is payable regardless of subsequent sales performance.

6. Product Development

  • The winning concept will be developed collaboratively by Home of Lights together
    with its design, engineering, manufacturing and/or Maker partners. The final product may be adapted, refined, simplified or otherwise modified throughout the
    development process to ensure: (a) commercial viability (b) manufacturing feasibility (c) electrical and product safety compliance (d) material availability (e) production efficiency (f) product quality (g) alignment with the Home of Lights brand

  • Home of Lights will determine the most appropriate method of developing and
    manufacturing the final product. This may include (but is not limited to) collaboration with independent Makers, prototyping, 3D printing, fabrication, casting, ceramics, timber, metalwork or other production methods. While Home of Lights will endeavour to preserve the original creative intent, the final product is not required to replicate the submitted concept exactly.

7. Product Feasibility

Home of Lights reserves the right not to proceed with commercial production if, at any
stage during development, the concept is determined to be commercially, technically,
legally or operationally unviable. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Safety or compliance requirements

  • Engineering limitations

  • Manufacturing capability

  • Supply chain constraints

  • Material availability

  • Commercial viability

  • Cost of production

Where a winner has already been formally announced, the $5,000 AUD design fee will
remain payable regardless of whether commercial production ultimately proceeds. The
$3,000 AUD sales bonus described above will only become payable if the product is in
fact commercially launched and the relevant net sales threshold is met within 12 months
of launch.

8. Intellectual Property

  • Entrants retain ownership of their original submission unless and until selected as the
    winner.

  • Upon selection as the winner and execution of the Collaboration Agreement, the
    winning entrant assigns to Home of Lights all intellectual property rights, title and
    interest in and to the winning submission and the developed product, worldwide and in
    perpetuity, including all rights necessary for Home of Lights to develop, manufacture, market, sell, reproduce and otherwise commercially exploit the product.

  • The final developed product, associated manufacturing processes, branding and
    commercialisation rights will belong to Home of Lights, subject to the prize entitlements set out above.

  • A formal Collaboration and Commercial Agreement, including the assignment of
    intellectual property rights, will be executed with the winning entrant prior to
    development commencing.

9. General

  • Home of Lights reserves the right to amend competition dates, timelines or processes where reasonably required.

  • Home of Lights may discontinue or postpone development of the winning concept
    where unforeseen commercial, manufacturing or regulatory circumstances arise.

  • Participation in the competition constitutes acceptance of these Terms & Conditions.

10. Timeline

  • This promotion starts on July 1, 2026 and final date for submission is August 16, 2026.
